I cannot tell you how excited I am about this giveaway! I was introduced to the book, Trim Healthy Mama, by Stacy Myers of Stacy Makes Cents. I met Stacy before she was a famous blogger. She’s even in my scrapbook from my college years. I bet she didn’t know that! :) Trim Healthy Mama came at exactly the right time. I had just switched to a more natural way of eating because my son, Gavin, was reacting to food dyes in a negative way. My thought was what else in our foods could be affecting all of us? He was what I first blogged about until I decided to become Whole Food Mom on a Budget. We first started by eliminating food dyes (see the verdict HERE) and we were going to follow the Feingold Diet for hyperactive children. It was overwhelming for me to implement, so I decided to just go all natural instead.
A switch to all natural foods was NOT going to help me lose weight, however. There are organic cookies and ice cream, ya know! ;) I wanted to eat right but I just didn’t know how. Although I was overweight in high school, I became super skinny in my twenties (too skinny at one time, in fact). After dealing with teasing about my appearance in high school, I became obsessed with looking good and the food that I ate. I freaked out if I ate an M&M.

I married at age 27 and had no idea how to eat with another person after living alone and controlling every morsel that came into my mouth. Generally men do want to eat food (imagine that?), so I cooked dinner every night. Before, I would eat a snack like popcorn or a few tortilla chips with cheese. Of course I started gaining weight since I was not used to eating so much. I went from a size 12 – I am tall and that seems to be my perfect size – to a size 16 in no time. I got pregnant with my son and when he cried 12 hours a day from reflux and food allergies, I just grabbed whatever was the most convenient to eat. I ate myself to a size 18 (a very tight 18!) and I’ve been there for more than 3 years. I hired a personal trainer a couple of years ago and it was not only exhausting with my busy schedule but it was expensive as well. I lost 35 pounds but then gained back 20 of those pounds when I could no longer afford the personal trainer to motivate me.

So, I pretty much gave up on losing weight even though I REALLY, REALLY wanted to because I was at a loss at what to do. Did I mention that I have PCOS? It is a hormonal disorder that makes it difficult to lose weight and become pregnant. I’m full of problems, aren’t I? ;) Then Stacy posted about Trim Healthy Mama and I got excited about what she wrote! I bought the book myself and told my mom about it too. Not to be outdone, my mom also bought the book. We are best friends so of course we are competitive. :) In one month, I’ve lost 12 pounds and my mom has lost 14. I am so happy for my mom but I will admit that I am jealous that she’s lost two more pounds than me. Did I mention that we were competitive? LOL

Serene and Pearl have come up with an awesome plan for losing weight that works! My mom and I just want to hug these sisters for writing their book! I love the fact that I can eat until I feel full instead of limiting myself to a certain amount of calories and dying of hunger. Let me also mention how much more energy I have had since eating the THM way! I still have about 50 more pounds to lose but losing so much weight in such a short period of time is so encouraging and makes the sacrifices needed to stay on the plan seem easy! One of the sacrifices is no more white sugar. And that ties into another sacrifice in that I have to make all of my desserts. It’s not always easy but being overweight is not always easy, either. I’m just super, super happy that I can still eat dessert! I was ADDICTED to white sugar and now that I don’t eat it, I don’t have all of the cravings that I had before.

I’m no expert on the THM plan (there can be a long learning curve) and Stacy explained it so well -you can read her review here- but I’ll give you a tiny preview. Protein is the heart of every meal and you don’t want to mix carbs and fats together. There you have it. :) The book is LONG (607 pages) but it’s a great read and I quickly got the gist of the S (satisfying) and E (energy) meals and started the plan a week after getting the book. You CAN do this! This is not a fad but a way of life. I can eat this way for the rest of my life and not feel cheated or deprived. If you don’t win the Trim Healthy Mama E Book, you can buy the E Book version and paperback version on the Trim Healthy Mama Website or the paperback version on Amazon.com.
